Students Get Ready

Students Get Ready for Next Stage of Competition

Teams of budding young entrepreneurs are preparing to compete in the next stage of an exciting and popular regional schools competition.

Back in June, over 3,500 students from across Neath Port Talbot, Swansea and Carmarthenshire took part in the first stage of the Swansea Bay Young Business Dragons event, which challenged teams to create a business idea around the theme of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

33 qualifying teams now have the opportunity to represent their school at area semi finals being held later on this month at venues including: The National Waterfront Museum, Great Western Aberavon Beach Hotel and Parc y Scarlets.

The semi finals will see the students develop a marketing strategy for their business and will feature a presentation from the Chartered Institute of Marketing.  Local companies have been recruited to mentor the teams giving them invaluable guidance and an insight into the real world of business.

Rachael Wheatley, Director and Founder of Waters Creative Ltd., one of the events business mentors, commented:” Being an ex pupil of Morriston Comprehensive I jumped at the opportunity to mentor their team. I have been really impressed with how the ‘Olympic Inspirations’ team have taken a very timely idea and really thought into how this can be capitalised and marketed. Their ideas on how to sustain this concept for the future are very business savvy. The team brings together a great mix of individuals, they are fun, bright and brimming with ideas.  I am greatly looking forward to the Semi Finals and I hope my team go all the way”.

The event is sponsored by gas distribution company Wales & West Utilities. Graham Edwards, the company’s Chief Executive, said: “We have been very impressed with the enthusiasm from local schools in taking part in this exciting new competition.  We would like to wish all 33 teams the best of luck for the next stage of the competition and we look forward to seeing which 6 teams are short listed for the Regional Finals in November.”

The competition, organised by Swansea Bay Partnership in association with Careers Wales West, will come to an exciting conclusion with a Dragons Den style final hosted by 96.4FM The Wave presenter Siany.  The finals will be held at Margam Orangery, Margam Park on 17th November and will see the 6 short-listed teams pitch their business ideas to a judging panel of local business experts.

The overall winning team and business idea will scoop £1,000 prize money for the school and the coveted title of ‘Swansea Bay Young Business Dragons 2011’.  Team members will also receive £50 worth of vouchers each and VIP tickets to the ‘Swans v Norwich’ game at Liberty Stadium.

The event is further supported by the business community with Sponsors including: Lloyds TSB, TATA Steel, Baglan Bay Power Station and Carillion.
