Young Dragons 2012 Semi Final

Budding Entrepreneurs prepare for next stage of Competition

Teams of budding young entrepreneurs are preparing to compete in the next stage of an exciting and popular regional schools competition.

Over the last 3 months, over 7,000 students from across Neath Port Talbot, Swansea and Carmarthenshire took part in the first stage of the Swansea Bay Young Business Dragons event, sponsored by Wales & West Utilities, which challenged teams to create a business idea around the theme of UK Festivals.

40 qualifying teams now have the opportunity to represent their school at area semi finals being held later on this month at venues including: The Village Hotel, Swansea; Great Western Aberavon Beach Hotel, Port Talbot and Ffos Las, Carmarthenshire.

The semi finals will see the teams of students develop a radio marketing jingle for their business in the ’96.4FM the Jingle Workshop’.  Teams will set up exhibition stands to show case to the judges their business idea.  Stands will include artwork, prototypes and websites designs.  The teams will pitch their business idea to the semi final judges with just 2 teams from each area semi final making it through to the final stage of the competition.

Over 45 local companies volunteered their time to mentor the teams giving them invaluable guidance and an insight into the real world of business.

Adam Amor  Director of Buffoon Film & Media commented “As a young entrepreneur myself, it's refreshing to see a business competition that gets young people to think big and be creative with their ideas. This is my second year as a mentor for Ysgol Gyfun Ystalyfera and I'm looking forward to working with my group to channel their idea and develop it further.'

The main sponsor of the event is gas distribution company Wales & West Utilities. Graham Edwards, the company’s Chief Executive, said: “We have been very impressed with the enthusiasm from local schools in taking part in this exciting new competition.  We would like to wish all 40 teams the best of luck for the next stage of the competition and we look forward to seeing which 6 teams are short listed for the Regional Finals in November.”

The competition, organised by Swansea Bay Partnership in association with Careers Wales, will come to an exciting conclusion with a Dragons Den style final hosted by 96.4FM The Wave.  The finals will be held at Ffos Las, Carmarthenshire on 16th November and will see the 6 short-listed teams pitch their business ideas to a judging panel of local business experts.

The overall winning team and business idea will scoop £1,000 prize money for the school and the coveted title of ‘Swansea Bay Young Business Dragons 2012’.

The event is further supported by the business community with Sponsors including: Derwen, UK Steel Enterprise Ltd. and Carillion.
