At an event hosted by the authority's Businesses Development Team, 19 local contractors, including carpenters, cleaners, bricklayers and landscapers, met with contractors Dawnus Construction to discuss sub-contracting opportunities during the building of the new Ysgol Newydd Sandfields Primary School.

Neath Port Talbot Council leader Ali Thomas said the Authority is committed to supporting local businesses in the county borough.

"I am delighted that the Council has been able to bring the skills these local businesses have to the attention of Dawnus Construction," he said.

"The company recognises that there is a highly skilled workforce in the county borough and they are dedicated to working with the authority to provide local people with employment opportunities, now and in the future."

Dawnus Contractors are keen to give businesses a helping hand, while at the same time strengthen their supply chain during the building of the new Ysgol Newydd Sandfields  School, which will house pupils from Glan-Y-Mor and Tir Morfa primary schools as well as the Ty Afan Unit.

The majority of the companies that attended are being considered for work on the project, whilst all have been added to the company's database for consideration on future projects.

Russell Evans, Regional Director at Dawnus Construction Ltd said: "Dawnus is very pleased to be working with the Authority at Neath Port Talbot on this important scheme, and as a Local Contractor is absolutely committed to maximising the benefit that the community and its businesses derive from the scheme."

Work on the new school began in September and is scheduled for completion in October 2013.
