Approval for Afan Lido Rebuild

Approval for Afan Lido rebuild

Councillors in Neath Port Talbot have unanimously approved plans to rebuild the Afan Lido sports complex.

The Council's Cabinet has accepted the recommendations of the cross-party Scrutiny Task and Finish Group established to look into the replacement for the Afan Lido which was destroyed by fire in December 2009.

The new £13.6million facility will be built on the neighbouring Hollywood Park site, and will feature:

- 8 lane, 25metres swimming pool with boom and moveable floor
- Learner/splash pool
- 100 seat wet-side spectator gallery
- 4 court sports hall with retractable seating for 100 spectators (6 courts if extra funding becomes available)
- 100 station fitness suite
- Combined dance studio/dojo
- Wet & dry side changing facilities
- Youth club facility
- Community meeting rooms
- Indoor children's soft play area
- Cafeteria

It was recommended that the Sandfields Library would not be incorporated into the plans.

Councillor Anthony Taylor, Chair of the Task and Finish Group said: "We opted for this site because it gives us a wider regeneration possibility to attract further investment.  If we had gone for the old site then it would have reduced the amount of money available for the rebuild.  We took the time needed to address all the key questions and have provided all the answers.  This exciting new facility will not only serve the public of Neath Port Talbot but also for those visitors who come from far and wide."

It is expected that work will start on the project during the summer.

Leader of Neath Port Talbot, Ali Thomas said: "I am proud of everyone who has played a part in this whole process from elected members to officers and the public. Despite the current economic climate, we will be delivering a project which will provide twenty first century facilities so local people and visitors alike can enjoy this wonderful seafront resort."
