Work is underway on the new leisure complex at Aberavon Seafront
Developer Corban Investments and their contractor, Heron Bros Ltd., have started construction of the £13.4m facility which is being built adjacent to Reel Cinema.
The investment in the landmark seafront location will result in a purpose-built beachfront leisure centre, complete with ‘wave design’ roof and featuring a 25m pool with moveable floor; multiple changing facilities, gym/fitness suite, dance studio, four court sports hall, cafe and community rooms.
Chris Mundow from Corban Investments said: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with Neath Port Talbot Council on this important project which is of great significance at both economic and community levels, supporting the wider regeneration of Neath Port Talbot and also bringing benefits to the local area and its residents”.
Corban Investments has brought together a team of specialists with national and international experience to plan, design and deliver the project.
Contractor Heron Bros Ltd is a privately owned company with a track record of delivering large and complex construction projects including many in the sports and leisure sectors. Recently, they have delivered the ‘Caerphilly Centre for Sporting Excellence’ for the Newport Dragons and Cardiff City FC.
One of the Council’s key aims is to maximise community benefits from regeneration projects such as this one. The Council’s Business Development team will be working closely with Heron Brothers throughout the duration of the contract to ensure local businesses benefit from the project.
Ken Whan, Operations Director of Heron Bros added: “Heron Bros is delighted at being selected as the contractor for the iconic new Aberavon Seafront Leisure Centre in Port Talbot.
“We look forward to delivering this fantastic project in conjunction with Corban Investments, Neath Port Talbot Council and the design team in the months ahead, and to working closely with the local community and the local supply chain in its delivery.”
A ‘Meet the Buyer Event’ has already been held where Heron Bros outlined the opportunities on the project and explained how potential contractors can register on their approved supplier list.
The event was attended by over 60 contractors including plant hire, structural steel providers, general builders, painters and decorators, flooring and landscaping companies.
Andy Thorburn, Regional Sales & Marketing Manager for Express Reinforcements Ltd attended the event and said: “These events provide local businesses with an excellent opportunity to meet developers and main contractors working on key projects within the area. Attending these in the past has enabled us to meet with buyers at an early stage, and given us the chance to successfully bid for work packages”.
Councillor Peter Rees, Deputy Leader of Neath Port Talbot Council said: “This will be a wonderful twenty first century facility we can all be proud of and will be a focal point in enhancing our strategy and vision for regenerating the whole area.
“I am delighted to see that the contractor is working with us to provide trading opportunities for local businesses.
“Creating local job opportunities is one of our key priorities and it is vital that we make the most of investment and construction projects such as this one to benefit local businesses and people and in the County Borough.”
